Ada banyak tantangan yang hadir di hadapan seorang Natalie Imbruglia tatkala ia mengonsep sebuah album cover yang berisikan lagu-lagu dari para vokalis pria. Album "Male" yang dalam waktu dekat akan dirilis berisikan belasan lagu dari Cat Stevens, Neil Young, Damien Rice, Zac Brown, dan masih banyak lagi. Termasuk 'Instant Crush' ini, lagu original Daft Punk yang memakai vokal Julian Casablancas di dalamnya. Ini dijadikan single perdana dari album studio kelima Nat, yang bagian produksinya diarahkan oleh Billy Mann.
Rombakan musik akan menjadi permasalahan utama yang hadir dalam proyek ini. Secara spesifik ke 'Instant Crush', tema synthpop disko elektronika dipermak untuk bergulir dalam wheelhouse Nat yaitu poprock. Gerak-gerik musik yang berasal dari instrumen gitar mengarahkan lagu untuk meluncur mulus di arena akustik. So, tantangan pertama ini sudah dijawab dengan perubahan genre yang mencolok dan bernilai maksimum.
Another flip 180 dalam single ini adalah vokal. Kita sudah tahu betul kalau Nat nyaris tak memiliki potensi tertosteron dalam vokalnya. Meski ia membangun karir di bawah payung poprock/alternatif yang didominasi oleh kaum pria, vokal yang sangat feminin miliknya merupakan kmoditas utama jualannya. Apalagi di momen ini, saat ia tak punya andil dalam penulisan lagu-lagu yang ia bawakan, semakin besarlah peran dan fungsi vokal tersebut.
Keputusan menjadikan 'Instant Crush' sebagai single perdana merupakan keputusan yang sangat tepat. Lagu ini memiliki struktur yang tak jauh dari beberapa lagu Nat di masa lampau. Sebut saja 'Wrong Impression' atau 'That Day' yang memiliki bagian dimana Nat harus disibukkan dengan lirik yang banyak dan padat. Artikulasi yang sempurna dengan kontrol nafas yang advance merupakan faktor teknis yang telah berhasil menunjukkan kelasnya. Natalie Imburglia mungkin tidak sepopuler dulu, tapi ia masih secemerlang dulu.
