Penyanyi sekaligus penulis lagu, RAYE, telah menerima tujuh nominasi BRIT Awards, sebuah rekor baru untuk satu artis dalam setahun.
Pelantun ‘Prada’ tersebut berhasil melampaui Craig David, Gorillaz dan Robbie Williams, yang sebelumnya memegang rekor dengan masing-masing enam nominasi.
Perolehan RAYE termasuk satu untuk Artist of the Year, sebuah kategori di mana enam dari 10 nominasinya adalah perempuan. Hal ini berbeda jauh dengan tahun lalu, ketika terjadi penggabungan kategori artis terbaik pria dan wanita dan menghasilkan daftar artis terbaik yang seluruhnya terdiri dari pria.
Menyusul kritik yang muncul akibat hal tersebut, penyelenggara BRIT Awards telah memperluas kategori Artist of the Year dari 5 menjadi 10 slot. Hasilnya adalah nominasi untuk artis wanita yakni RAYE, Jessie Ware, Olivia Dean, Little Simz, Arlo Parks dan Dua Lipa, dengan artis pria yakni Dave, Central Cee, J Hus dan Fred Again.
Sebaliknya, beberapa musisi pria ternama justru tidak termasuk dalam kategori tersebut tahun ini, dengan Ed Sheeran dan Lewis Capaldi sama-sama kehilangan pengakuan dalam kategori Artist of the Year dan Album of the Year.
ED Sheeran merilis dua album selama periode seleksi BRIT Awards, dan keduanya sukses mencapai nomor satu. Lewis Capaldi juga menduduki puncak tangga lagu dengan album keduanya, “Broken by Desire to be Heavenly Sent.”
Namun, keduanya mendapatkan nominasi untuk Song of the Year, Ed Sheeran untuk single ‘Eyes Closed’ dan Lewis Capaldi untuk ‘Wish You The Best.’
