Have some edge! Sam Smith keluar dari kubah melodrama 'Stay With Me' dan 'I'm Not the Only One' untuk mencoba mempopulerkan 'Like I Can'. Layaknya kejutan, kehadiran single ini tak terduga, terkait dengan masa dimana album "In the Lonely Hour" serta 'Stay' mendapat banyak sorotan di acara pengumuman nominasi Grammy 2015, berikut 'I'm Not' yang masih berjuang di chart papan atas. Matt Prime yang 50-50 menyumbangkan ide bersama Sam dalam lagu ini mampu memberi dorongan ke arah gairah lain dan menyemburkan pesona dalam dimensi berbeda untuk sang vokalis.
Mohon maaf kalau yang terjadi akan sangat mengecewakan beberapa pihak, karena sepintas, pesona yang Sam coba tebarkan disini justru sangat mengimplementasikan musik soul arak-arakan Emeli Sande. Tampil seolah-seolah 'Next to Me 2.0',lagu ini sejajar dalam satu semangat beat dan dinamika. Tapi siapa bilang kalau soul hanya milik Emeli, karena tetap ada tempat bagi siapapun yang akan men-tackle genre yang sama, meskipun dengan gerak-gerik serupa.
'Like I Can' secara lirik memborbardir kelebihan saingan yang akan dikalahkan oleh satu kekuatan. Kekuatan itu bernama cinta. Dalam album yang menyalurkan tema patah hati sebagai ide utamanya, drama lagu ini terasa lebih positif, lebih optimis dibandingkan single-single Sam sebelumnya. 'Like I Can' adalah semangat untuk meraih cinta, tanpa mengiba atau meng-embrace rasa sedih dan kecewa. And if we read between the lines, lagu ini bisa menerapkan anything is possible, tanpa harus terkesan memaksa.
